“In the US, 40% of adults in treatment for an alcohol use disorder do not end up finishing treatment. So, it is critical to have a more nuanced understanding of who is ending their treatment early to prevent certain groups from being left behind.”
In a first-of-its-kind study, researchers utilized intersectionality for their alcohol abuse treatment research and revealed previously unknown health disparities. As in other studies, completion rates for Black, Hispanic/Latino, and American Indian and Alaska Native individuals were lower than their white counterparts. The results also displayed greater inequities for minority women than men.
This study demonstrates the importance of evaluating research with an intersectional lens. The more understanding we have of existing inequities, the better the care outcomes will be.
